The community of Lilongwe celebrated the feast of Mary Help Christians on 24th May 2013. This day was well organized by the staff of Don Bosco Technical College and the students. The celebration of the day began with mass in the Multi-purpose hall where all the students gathered. Thanks to the college choir for their well organized songs led by Chikondi Zimba. The main celebrant, Fr. Kim and his assistant Fr. Michael entered the hall with joy in order to celebrate the mass of Mary Help of Christians. In his Homily, Fr. Kim highlighted the historical background of the feast and why Don Bosco had special devotion to Mary. He encouraged all the students to have special place of Mary in their lives. “If you have special place of Mary in your life, she will always intercede for you” were his concluding words during his homily. After the special blessings at the end of the Mass, all students remained in the hall for the special activities they prepared for the day.
The tension rose and the students were getting nervous while they were waiting to perform their activities. They appeared to worry on who would be on the first position to perform a better activity. The masters of ceremonies for the day were Memory Harneck and Jamil Banda who graced the day with their modern dressing that made the students applause them as they entered to take the microphones. Thanks to the Judges, the Vice Principal, Mr. Ken Mlima, Br. Mayamiko and Madam Lweya who helped in selecting the best performance of the day.
The students’ activities started with Accounting section that performed an educative play on the importance of speaking English in the school campus. This activity was followed by other sections that showed their amazing talents. The students’ activities ended with construction that had a special dance that attracted other students and teachers to dance with them.
After a nice morning, the staff and students had special lunch together at Savio Restaurant. This lunch was prepared by the Hotel and Catering department which was led by the Chief Cook, Mr. Allick Masina
After lunch we had sports, students versus staff members. During the sport activities there was a mesmerizing sign from the students to see their teachers playing games like volleyball, netball and football. The sport activities started at 14:30 with Volleyball. After an exciting match the teachers had to face their defeat, they lost 2 sets against the students.The next discipline, Netball was more favorable on the side of the teachers; they won the game through an excellent performance.
Although the students exchanged their goalkeeper (all from the IT section) 3 times it couldn’t help them to win the game but nor could the teachers, who invited ex-teachers and other members, not to win the battle. The scores on side of the students were done by Balalika and Symon; on side of the teachers Mr. Muhime and Collins. At the end of the game, we had a draw 2-2.
For the teachers the event ended through a “Partage de Vere” where the teacher gathered together and had a nice close of the festival in the evening.
